Dr Vinay Jadhav talks about diet teas and related myths

Why Diet Teas don’t work

Dieters are so desperate that they can try anything to lose weight. They are ready to believe any product that is put in front of them and claims to help in losing weight. Diet or herbal teas are widely marketed as products that help in weight loss. Dr Vinay Jadhav thinks that people are very misguided about such teas and they do not actually make a big difference in the weight loss process. According to Dr Vinay Jadhav, diet teas are supposed to be taken every day. However, green tea or herbal diet teas and their ingredients may differ.

Dr Vinay Jadhav explains that the mechanism of action of these teas is supposedly to increase the energy consumption rate of the body or to provide the body an external source of laxative to cleanse the body. Dr Vinay Jadhav points out that the laxative that these teas may contain affects the colon and not the intestines where the calorie consumption is done. Dr Vinay Jadhav explains that there can be almost or no difference caused anyway because weight loss has nothing to do with calories or exponential burning of calories.

Dr Vinay Jadhav tells that calories are a mere unit of energy and they can be obtained from various essential elements of the food. Calories are obtained by the body from carbohydrates, proteins as well as fats. It does not matter where they come from because they are ultimately broken down to simple glucose and absorbed by the body. Dr Vinay Jadhav says that if the contents of the diet tea include a laxative then consuming this tea daily may actually cause problems to the body. Due to the laxative that is consumed daily, a person may experience diarrhoea (which dieters believe the myth that it is a result of insufficient calorie burning), vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, and in a few cases even fainting and dehydration. Apart from this, if the colon gets used to a laxative, then curbing the consumption of the tea may create problem for a normal bowel movement. This condition is called as ‘lax colon’. Dr Vinay Jadhav warns that in some extreme cases, the colon stops functioning completely and needs to be removed. Over use of laxative containing drinks can also cause electrolyte disorders, severe constipation and chronic pain.

Dr Vinay Jadhav tells that most diet teas contain elements like- aloe, rhubarb root, castor oil etc. Dr Vinay Jadhav also shed light on the probability that products like methylcellulose, agar-agar, psyllium are also added to diet products like diet teas to enable a sense of fullness. Due to this people feel that they will be encouraged to eat less and in turn lose weight. But Dr Vinay Jadhav says that nutrition should not be compromised by using products like these because they can harm the body in many ways.

Another thing that Dr Vinay Jadhav points out is that caffeine is also added to these drinks as it is believed to supress hunger and increase metabolism. Dr Vinay Jadhav states that there is very little evidence to prove that caffeine can increase metabolism, however, it is known to increase energy level in people.

Dr Vinay Jadhav states the current state of the world wide epidemic of obesity that gravely threatened the health of the people. Obesity does not discriminate and it is a disorder that needs to be paid attention to. Large level commercialization of this epidemic is pathetic and calls for affected people to remain alert and not sway in favour of products that offer quick relief. Dr Vinay Jadhav stresses on the fact that there is not magic pill or drink that can cause quick weight loss or individual weight loss. If there were such products then people would have never gotten fat and we would not have faced weight issues on such a huge level. Dr Vinay Jadhav says that obesity leads to many health issues if not taken care of at the right time and in the right way.

Common belief that a low calorie diet coupled with exercise is the ultimate solution to weight loss is also misleading. Diet drinks, diet foods, gluten free foods, low sugar foods, artificial sweeteners all promise way more than what they can actually yield. A weight loss program that can provide actual results that last for long and do not harm your health should be followed. Dr Vinay Jadhav advises people to consult a doctor before embarking on weight loss program or drinking slimming products just because they promise results.

Another fact about the low fat diets on which Dr Vinay Jadhav would like to stress on is that low fat diets advocate a reduction in the saturated fats, which are actually not harmful but may prove important to the blood-lipid profile. Dr Vinay Jadhav also states that low fat diets encourage vegetable oils that can contribute towards inflammation and may possibly increase the risk of heart disease. Apart from this, Dr Vinay Jadhav also shares that low fat diets discourage consumption of protein rich animal foods like eggs, fish and meat which may induce satiety and help in weight loss in a way. Dr VinayJadhav thus thinks that people should know every aspect of a diet before embarking upon it. Low fat diets have not shown a great success rate, though they create a mild difference, because they lack in the basics. Dr Vinay Jadhav says that these diets are a little more wrong than a little more right for the body.
